West Branch: Massachusetts Section W-9: Holyoke Range via the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail This section of the proposed New England Trail would follow the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail over the high, rugged cliffs of the Holyoke Range (part of the Metacomet Ridge). It features miles of scenic vistas, rare microclimate plant communities, woodland, as well as several historic sites. W-9.0 Mount Holyoke Mount Holyoke is famous for the renovated Summit House, once a mountain top hotel, now a museum. An auto road ascends the summit. W-9.1 Seven Sisters and Mount Hitchcock The Metacomet-Monadnock Trail passes over these ridge top peaks with cliffs facing north and overlooks over the Amherst area. W-9.2 Bare Mountain Bare Mountain offers dramatic cliff top views. A former cold war SAC bunker, now a library repository, is located below the summit to the north. W-9.3 Mount Norwottuck Mount Norwottuck is the highest point in the Holyoke Range. It offers views from cliffs and rugged hiking. Rattlesnake Knob, an eastern summit, also offers fine views. The Horse Caves, a sedimentary rock overhang beneath the summit, were used during Shay's Rebellion in the late 18th century. W-9.4 Long Mountain to end of range Long Mountain is the east-most significant summit of the Holyoke Range. Views from cliffs are expansive. The range ends near Route 9 in Belchertown. http://www.belchertownlandtrust.org/
