West Branch: Connecticut Section W-6: Hanging Hills to Farmington Mountain via the Metacomet Trail This section of the proposed New England Trail would follow the Metacomet Trail over the high, rugged cliffs of the Metacomet Ridge in the Quinnipiac River Valley and Farmington River Valley from Berlin, Connecticut. to Farmington Connecticut. The Metacomet Trail is an established footway. It features miles of scenic vistas, rare microclimate plant communities, woodland, as well as several historic sites. W-6.0: Hanging Hills The Hanging Hills are a series of 1000 foot high cliffs that rise above the city of Meriden in central Connecticut. Much of the hills are preserved as watershed and as part of Hubbard Park. The hills feature dramatic cliff faces, highland ponds and reservoirs, and the historic Hubbard Park, designed with the help of famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead. The hills consist of four summits: Cathole Mountain, South Mountain, East Peak and West Peak. W-6.1: Short Mountain although among the smallest of the Metacomet Ridge peaks, Short mountain offers scenic vistas from its ledges and attractive, rugged woodlands. W-6.2: Ragged Mountain The dramatic red cliffs of Ragged Mountain are a rock climbing Mecca. Much of the mountain has been conserved as watershed land or as conservation property. W-6.3: Bradley Mountain The west side of Bradley Mountain has been
conserved as state park, municipal park, and watershed land. Scenic
vistas are to be had from the mountain's cliffs. Pinnacle Rock was once part of a Nike missile
base, now closed and dismantled. Foundations of the base can be found on the
mountain. The summit offers expansive views of the Farmington River Valley. Rattlesnake Mountain is known for its scenic cliff faces and boulder caves. W-6.6: Farmington Mountain Farmington mountain is a mostly wooded traprock ridge. The historic Hill-Stead Museum is located on the mountain. The museum and the town of Farmington manage a series of footpaths over the mountain and along the adjacent Farmington Reservoir. W-7.0: Talcott Mountain Talcott Mountain is a 13 mile long traprock ridge located west of Hartford, Connecticut. The ridge is known for its miles of scenic cliffs, historic sites, microclimate ecosystems, and many highland reservoirs. Two state parks are located on the mountain.
