- 2: Greenways—the
"green road" solution.
One of the most effective
ways to address the need to set aside open space is to mobilize local communities into
taking a proactive, determined role in conserving land in their own
town or city. In essence,
redefining 'community' as 'livable', 'sustainable', and 'beautiful' rather than just
'commercial.' Community greenways are a powerful means of
achieving this end. Greenways function like "green roads." They
link separate communities together via green space as opposed to auto-centric pavement. And because greenways transcend local boundaries, they promote
regional cooperation. This cooperation encourages a momentum of will and pride dedicated to preservation of resources that are vital to the
community. The dynamic viability of greenway projects can be observed in
the amazing success of the Appalachian Trail and the Long Trail, among
others.
Likewise, the New England
Trail Project is one more model for the eventual widespread creation of
greenways in every town and city in the Northeast.
