A note from the editors
Although the New England Trail has prompted interest
leading to increased land conservation and trail building, no concerted
effort has been made to make this proposal a reality.
The New England Trail proposal began in 1996 (published in 1998) as an
idea loosely based on Benton MacKaye's original
proposal for the Appalachian Trail. Benton MacKaye, 'the father of the Appalachian Trail', originally
envisioned the A.T. as having many spur paths connecting communities and
cities to the main spine of the Appalachian Trail. The New England Trail
is an extension of that spirit--the skeletal beginnings of a
greenway system that would eventually reach into every single community in
New England.
It is our hope that the New England Trail proposal will continue to
inspire others to build trails and conserve land on which trails can be built.
Ideas, suggestions, comments, and assistance are welcome; if anyone would
like to take it off our hands, please let us know.
Sincerely,
Leo J. Roy
