New England Trail greenway proposal: New Haven area.
Description of proposed route from Lighthouse Point Park to West Rock Ridge

Note:
This is a proposed route only. Hikers wishing to follow the proposed route should plan on walking streets in those places where no trail route currently exists.  Bushwacks are possible in some trail-less areas that pass through publicly owned land, but are not recommended. Hikers should not cross into land posted as "no trespassing" or into the backyards of homes.

West Rock to Farmington Canal

From west to east:
--West Rock Ridge State Park
--Southern Connecticut University Campus (both sides of Farnham Ave & Fitch Street)
--Beaver Ponds Park
--Farmington Canal Bikeway/ East Coast Greenway

Farmington Canal to East Rock

 (marked in green; this section of the ECG not yet complete)

--Farmington Canal to Hamden ponds (Hamden ponds are a water department property; currently not open to public)
--East Border wooded water dept. buffer along Lake Whitney between lake & New Haven Country Club (not  open for hiking; private golf course) 
--West border along Lake Whitney
--Eli Whitney Museum (at south end of pond)

Alternate Route:
Mill Rock/Rochford Field area & related athletic fields.
--Water Authority property (bordering Armory Street)
--Edgerton Park

East Rock to Quinnipiac River

From west to east:
--Eli Whitney Museum (at south end of pond)
--East Rock Park
--Middletown Avenue green strip
--Route would pass under I-91 on highway buttress.

Quinnipiac River to Quarry Park Preserve:

North to south:

--Fargeorge Preserve/ Quinnipiac River estuary (A nature trail currently passes through half of the route; additional trail and boardwalks would be required to finish it. The route would pass beneath the highway on an existing concrete buttress platform).
--Fairmont Park
--Sunken railroad buffer greenstrip
--Quarry Park Preserve & related municipal land. (East Grand Ave to Warwick Street). A loop trail currently traverses the northern end of this park.
Quarry Park Preserve to East Shore Park

North to south:

--Reservoir Hill property (west of Burwell St.)
--Fort Wooster Park
--East Shore Park
East Shore Park to Lighthouse Point
North to south:
--East Shore Park
--Fort Nathan Hale
--Walk around Coast Guard station (use road)
--Black Rock/ Forbes Bluff
--Pardee Seawall Park
--Morris Cove beach. (The north end of the beach at Pardee Seawall is passable only in low tide; otherwise hikers must walk around via roads)
